Debunking Kidney Stones: What You Need to Know and How to Treat It

Your thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate multiple bodily functions including your metabolism and menstruation. Problems in your thyroid gland can range from minor inconveniences like goiter to major life-threatening cancer.

Common Problems with the Thyroid Gland

  1. Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is the condition wherein the thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones to support the body. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to mistakenly attack the thyroid gland, is the most common cause for hypothyroidism. It’s usually a mild case that affects teenagers and young adults. Some symptoms of hypothyroidism are
    – Fatigue
    – Weight gain
    – Dry skin
    – Constipation
    – Sensitivity to the coldTo treat hypothyroidism, your doctor will most likely prescribe hormone pills to regulate it back up to normal.
  2. Hyperthyroidism
On the other end of the spectrum is hyperthyroidism, which is an overproduction of hormones. Grave’s disease, similar to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, is the leading cause of hyperthyroidism. Watch out for these symptoms if you think you might be experiencing hyperthyroidism:
    – Weight loss
    – Restlessness
    – Muscle weakness
    – Increased sweating
    – Bulging eyes
  3. Goiter
Iodine deficiency in the diet causes an enlargement of the thyroid gland also known as goiter. Goiter normally affects people over the age of 40 and those with poor diets. Most cases will only require small doses of iodine, but more severe ones will require surgery to remove part of or the entire gland. Symptoms may include:- Swelling in the neck
    – Coughing
    – Difficulty in breathing
    – Hoarseness of voice
  4. Thyroid Nodules
Nodules are small solid or fluid-filled sacs that are caused by iodine deficient or Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. This thyroid problem isn’t as common as hyper- or hypothyroidism but can be cancerous in a few cases. Some nodules don’t produce any symptoms but still watch out for the following:
    – Increased pulse
    – Increased appetite
    – Tremors
    – Weight loss
    – Clammy skin

What You Can Do

Unfortunately, thyroid problems cannot be prevented. It can be mitigated by adjusting your iodine intake but it’s not a guarantee against it. Similarly, people who have a history of the disease within the family are at a higher risk of developing the same illness.

You can however prevent complications with early detection and treatment. Make sure to get your annual checkup especially if you’re aware of your family’s medical history.

Support your thyroid health

If you have had any of the above-mentioned diseases, or your family has a history of these conditions, you might want to include a food supplement to help regulate your thyroid hormones.
